Fewer than 1 million of Butte County's 1.07 million acres have burned in
recent wildfires. I chose not to call out this error when it appeared in
last meeting's item 3.2.g. Staff preparing these letters should realize
this figure is not plausible rather than repeating it here. Overlap
analysis shows just over 410,000 acres within Butte County also within
California_Fire_Perimeters since 2012. This figure is harrowing enough
and needs no embellishment.
Colby Mountain Recreation Project is on the fringe of the Dixie Fire,
several miles from Park. Benefit will go to the 32 corridor more than
to fire-damaged communities where the need to restore trust in nature
resides. 30+ miles of trail in Tehama backcountry and two miles within
Butte are not necesarily the best use of Butte County or BCRCD's limited
resources. Perhaps Forks of the Butte or Lake Oroville SRA next time.
As for directing statewide resources to recreation in our region, I do
strongly approve. But the case can be made more strongly with facts
than with fictions.
