Box 1649 T: 530.552.6172 Oroville, California 95965 F: 530.534.5745 buttecounty.net/dess FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 3, 2024 CONTACT Kristi Olio Butte County PIO 530.280.6820 BUTTE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT AND SOCIAL SERVICES ACTIVATE HOTLINE FOR HEAT-RELATED ASSISTANCE BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning effective immediately through 11:00 pm Tuesday, July 9, 2024. Due to the dangerously high temperatures and limited relief throughout the night, residents are urged to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Butte County Department of Employment and Social Services (DESS) has activated a hotline for heat-related assistance. The Hotline can provide you with fans, transportation to a cooling center, and alternative sheltering for those with access and functional needs (AFN). DESS Hotline Number: 530-552-6150 As with any extreme heat event, please utilize the following tips to avoid heat-related illnesses: x Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. x Stay Cool: Stay indoors as much as possible, especially during the hottest parts of the day. x Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid strenuous activities during the heat of the day. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioned spaces. Health Risks and Symptoms: Extreme heat can lead to serious health issues such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, move to a cooler place, drink water, and seek medical attention if necessary. ###
