BUTTE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT AND SOCIAL SERVICES ACTIVATE HOTLINE FOR
HEAT-RELATED ASSISTANCE
BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning effective immediately
through 11:00 pm Tuesday, July 9, 2024. Due to the dangerously high temperatures and limited relief
throughout the night, residents are urged to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
Butte County Department of Employment and Social Services (DESS) has activated a hotline for heat-related
assistance. The Hotline can provide you with fans, transportation to a cooling center, and alternative sheltering
for those with access and functional needs (AFN).
DESS Hotline Number: 530-552-6150
As with any extreme heat event, please utilize the following tips to avoid heat-related illnesses:
x Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.
x Stay Cool: Stay indoors as much as possible, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
x Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid strenuous activities during the heat of the day. If you must be outside,
take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioned spaces.
Health Risks and Symptoms:
Extreme heat can lead to serious health issues such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms include
heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fainting. If you or someone you know is experiencing these
symptoms, move to a cooler place, drink water, and seek medical attention if necessary.
