This follows the closures and detours put in place more than a month ago due to the former Hotel Marysville fire June 15. In collaboration with the city and in alignment with one of Caltrans’ core values of supporting economic prosperity in its communities, the department reopened the southbound lanes to improve traffic operations and restore access to local businesses while still maintaining safety for the traveling public by keeping the northbound lanes closed and placing a protective barrier in front of the burned building. “Safety is the department’s highest priority,” said Acting District Director Sergio Aceves. “At the same time, economic prosperity in our communities is vitally important. Reopening the southbound lanes will relieve some pressure off businesses effected by the closure and hopefully return some normalcy to their operations.” "Caltrans reacted immediately after our engineering report showed the safety perimeter in front of the building could be reduced from 120 feet to 60 feet," Marysville City Manager Jim Schaad said. "They ordered the construction of the debris barrier last week and put it in place quickly with their contractor. This is good for regional transportation concerns and will take some of the pressure off of our downtown area and residential streets. The City of Marysville thanks Caltrans for its quick response." All lanes were closed from 3rd to 6th Street to facilitate emergency response and ensure public safety after the fire started late on the night of June 15. After an engineering firm hired by the city determined only the top fifth floor of the former hotel, which opened in 1926, was at risk of collapsing, Caltrans and its contractor, Lamon Construction of Yuba City, designed and installed the debris barrier in front of the building in order to reopen the two southbound lanes. At this time, there is no timeline for a full reopening of the highway, and northbound traffic will continue to use the existing detour route exiting off SR-70/E Street at 3rd Street (see detour map). Commercial truck drivers are advised to continue following the designated detour routes to avoid downtown Marysville. Truck drivers should use Simpson Lane as the primary detour route. There are signed detours in place prior to coming into Marysville. State Route 99 is an alternate route when traveling from the Sacramento area to the Chico area. Big rig drivers are advised to adhere to posted signs and strictly follow the designated detour routes. Caltrans and the City of Marysville remain committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of the downtown area. Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements. The department will issue updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3.
