Subject: FW: Shigella outbreak
Dear Board Members-
Since my presentation on the Shigella Outbreak, Public Health has received six confirmed
cases of Shigella from among housed persons in Chico – five of the six are under the age of 14
years and all report they swam / visited the One Mile recreation area during the incubation
period.
California Department of Public Health has confirmed our doubts about the transmission
source being the water at One Mile since it is a running source as opposed to standing water.
It continues to be highly likely to be surface contact as these cases are genomically-related to
the Oroville outbreak but all deny having any person-to-person contact with someone
experiencing homelessness.
We met with the City of Chico today whose staff were again very cooperative. The City has
agreed to increase the cleaning / sanitizing protocol at bathrooms, pool handrails, benches,
etc. around the One Mile recreation area, and to post signage designed by Butte County Public
Health (BCPH) regarding open water and general hygiene throughout the area as well. Signage
will have both City and BCPH logos.
School starts in one week and lifeguards are on duty until Labor Day weekend so we are
hoping with enhanced cleaning and signage, and usage starting to wane, we will see reduced
cases from this area. We will continue with hand hygiene messaging throughout the summer.
