Subject: FYA: USFWS Sacramento Office to begin 5-year reviews on 19 species
Dear Partner,
Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Sacramento Fish and Wildlife Office announced that it will
initiate 5-year status reviews for the 19 species listed below under the Endangered Species Act. Under
the Act, the Service maintains lists of endangered and threatened wildlife and plant species in the Code
of Federal Regulations (CFR) at 50 CFR 17.11 (for wildlife) and 17.12 (for plants). Section 4(c)(2)(A) of
the Act requires the agency to review each listed species’ status at least once every 5 years. A 5-year
review is based on the best scientific and commercial data available at the time of the review; therefore,
we are requesting submission of any new information on the species below that has become available
since the last review.
Southern Sierra Nevada fisher
Fresno kangaroo rat
Giant kangaroo rat
Tipton kangaroo rat
San Joaquin kit fox
Riparian brush rabbit
Riparian woodrat
Buena Vista Lake ornate shrew
Blunt-nosed leopard lizard
San Francisco garter snake
Alameda whipsnake
Giant garter snake
Kern primrose sphinx moth
Callippe silverspot butterfly
Bakersfield cactus
California jewelflower
Keck's checker-mallow
Kern mallow
San Joaquin woolly-threads
These reviews will ensure listing classifications under the Act are accurate and recommend changes in
status where appropriate based on the latest science. In addition to reviewing the classification of these
species, the review is an opportunity to track species’ recovery progress and provides valuable
information to guide future conservation efforts. You can learn more about each species by visiting the
links on this page: https://www.fws.gov/office/sacramento-fish-and-wildlife/species
A Notice of Intent (NOI) was published in the Federal Register requesting submission of new information
no later than December 16, 2024; however, we will continue to accept new information about any species
at any time. If you would like to submit information on any of the species listed above to the Sacramento
Field Office, please send that information to our Listing and Classification Division at
fw8sfwocomments@fws.gov.
We greatly appreciate our long-standing partnership to conserve rare species in California, and we look
forward to continued coordination in the future. If you would like additional information or have any
questions about the NOI, please contact Amber Aguilera, Listing and Classification Division Supervisor, at
(916) 414–6626 or amber_aguilera@fws.gov.
Thank you,
Meghan
