State Route 162 Rehabilitation Project Set to Begin Construction
Project to Improve Pavement, Drainage and Safety Features through Oroville Corridor
OROVILLE — Caltrans, in partnership with the City of Oroville, will begin construction on
the State Route 162 Oroville Rehabilitation Project the week of April 20, bringing critical
roadway, safety and accessibility improvements to one of the city’s primary corridors.
Work will include rehabilitating the roadway pavement, improving drainage systems,
upgrading guardrail and signage, and modifying or replacing traffic signals and lighting.
The project will also bring pedestrian facilities into compliance with the Americans with
the corridor.
The project is designed to preserve and extend the service life of State Route 162 by
addressing pavement deterioration and aging infrastructure. The existing roadway has
begun to show signs of wear, including cracking that is expected to worsen without repair.
In addition, drainage systems in fair or poor conditions within the project area will be
rehabilitated to improve roadway stability and long-term performance
Upgrades to signage, striping and pedestrian facilities will bring the corridor up to current
standards and improve overall safety for all users.
This $25.9 million project is funded through the 2022 State Highway Operation and
Protection Program (SHOPP) and includes federal funding from the Infrastructure
Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). Teichert is the primary contractor on the project.
Caltrans has coordinated closely with the City of Oroville throughout the development of
this project to ensure local priorities are reflected and to help minimize impacts to
residents and businesses.
During construction, motorists should expect intermittent lane closures, reduced speeds in
work zones, and minor delays. Most work will occur at night to minimize traffic impacts.
Lane closures for the project are prohibited during the day and restricted between 9 p.m.
to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday, and between 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Caltrans will provide advance notice of traffic impacts and work schedules as construction
progresses.
Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11
Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work
Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews
performing these improvements.
