My son is on the high end of the spectrum, and I am his caregiver through IHSS. He is now 18 years old. I have to shower him, make him separate meals from what I eat because he has a special diet. He only eats certain foods and fruits. He can not button his own pants, tie his own shoes, or communicate verbally like you and I can. My son has recently gotten abusive to himself and others, biting, hitting, swallowing strange things because he chews on everything he can find to put in his mouth because it's his sensory spot that it soothes! I have had an ongoing fight for 24 hr supervision for my son because he is injuring himself and others (me, school aides, teachers, friends). I don't know why no one has called me back for a redetermination appointment. I was approved for 13 hours a week when my son is clearly 24 hr care, and it is an injustice to my son and myself because I have a bachelor's degree in business management with an Operations Management certificate that I am unable to use. After all, my son was only approved for 2 hours a day or 1 hour a day each week of each pay period! This is absurd if someone could live with me for a week or two and endure EVERYTHING that I do for my son and have to deal with, I do believe that I wouldn't be struggling to feed us both right now! I am sending this same message to our governor, Gavin Newsom, in hopes that I am heard and a JUSTICE comes out of my pleas for more help for my son and me! Thank you & Be Well, Ms. Rosie T.
