RE: DeSabla-Centerville Hydroelectric Project, FERC No. 803-CA
Butte Canal – Return to Service Status Update
Dear Frank L. Blackett:
This letter presents a status update regarding the operational status of Butte Canal,
which is part of Pacific Gas and Electric Company's (PG&E) DeSabla-Centerville
Hydroelectric Project, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) No. 803. On
March 14, 2024, PG&E committed to providing FERC a final decision regarding the
future of Butte Canal by December 1, 2024. PG&E has decided that it will not pursue
returning Butte Canal to service because of the extent and cost of the necessary
repairs, which would negatively impact PG&E customers. As a result, flows will remain
in Butte Creek and will not be diverted for generation purposes .
As required by the November 19, 2024, FERC Notice of Violation (NOV), PG&E will
indicate PG&E’s future plans for the ultimate disposition of Butte Canal, or plans for
filing an amendment to the project license or modifying our relicense application to
remove it from the project, by February 17, 2025.
If you have questions or comments regarding this matter, please contact Sky Ramirez-
Doble, license coordinator for PG&E, at (530) 250-7002.
Sincerely,
Janet Walther
Director, Hydro Licensing
