There are over 100 members of the bipartisan caucus that focuses on western and rural issues such as energy, mining, timber, agriculture, ranching, water, and public lands. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus and continue fighting for rural America. The Western Caucus has been a strong voice in Washington for over 30 years, and I’m excited to work with the Trump Administration and our members to deliver real results for the folks who call the West home. The Caucus has a unique position to be able to work closely with the Trump administration, who shares our values on the need to expand American energy, take the yoke of federal bureaucracy off of the American farmer and rancher, and to unleash the potential of rural America by getting Washington D.C. out of the way. I am excited for the future, and ready to get to work. District Events October was packed with opportunities to engage with the people and projects that make our district so unique. Wildfire prevention and forest management were major focuses this month. I hosted House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glen ‘GT’ Thompson in Butte County for a discussion on tackling wildfire risk through improved forest management strategies, local business involvement, and innovative solutions like animal grazing. I also joined Rep. Mark Amodei (R-NV) at the Sierra Forestry Meeting in Reno, where we focused on taking action to protect our forests and reduce wildfire risks. Image Celebrating our agricultural achievements was another highlight. I attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Butte County Farm Bureau’s new headquarters, where I was recognized as a ‘Friend of the Farm Bureau’ by the American Farm Bureau Federation. I also joined the Farm City Celebration Committee Awards Reception to honor individuals making a difference in agriculture and was honored to receive an appreciation aware from the Glenn County Farm Bureau for supporting our farmers and ranchers. Image In Chico, I hosted a roundtable with the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, exploring ways to address the affordable housing crisis through partnerships and regulatory reform. We also celebrated a significant step for Chico Regional Airport, with the FAA announcing a $1 million grant to help restore commercial flights—an exciting boost for our local economy. Image As we marked the 6th anniversary of the Camp Fire, I presented the Rebuild Paradise Foundation with a certificate of recognition and was able to admire the new mural they unveiled featuring over 2,000 handprints from local children. I also marked progress in Berry Creek with the completion of phase one in rebuilding Berry Creek Elementary School, bringing students back to their classrooms after years of travel due to the Bear Fire. These events highlight the strength, resilience, and dedication of our district. It’s an honor to represent such hardworking and passionate people. D.C. Update As we close out the year, we’re focused on wrapping up some big priorities here in Washington— work that’s long overdue. One of the main items on our plate is passing a clean National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This annual legislation provides the resources and policies our armed forces need to protect our nation and counter growing threats worldwide. We’re also working to hammer out a government funding package. Our goal is simple: avoid reckless spending while making sure taxpayer dollars are used wisely for the things that truly matter. On top of that, we’re pushing for disaster recovery funding to help folks hit hard by natural disasters begin to rebuild and get back on their feet. One of our key priorities is H.R. 5863, the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act, which has already passed in the House. This important bill delivers tax relief for families and businesses in disaster zones, cutting through the bureaucratic red tape to help people recover faster. But the work isn’t done—we’re now looking to the Senate to act quickly and pass this relief so that those affected can get the support they need without further delay. Another critical bill we’re hoping to pass is H.R. 6951, the College Cost Reduction Act. With college costs out of control, this bill brings more transparency to higher education funding, holds schools accountable for student success, and makes degrees more affordable for families across the country. It’s also a big win for taxpayers, saving over $185 billion. As we work towards these critical pieces of legislation, our focus remains on delivering real solutions for the American people. Whether it’s ensuring military has the resources it needs, providing disaster relief to those who’ve lost everything, or making college more affordable, we’re working to make a tangible difference in the lives of everyday Americans. With your support, we’ll continue fighting to get these bills passed and deliver the results that matter most before the year is out. Let’s finish strong and keep moving this country forward.
