Happy Public Service Recognition Week!
Thank you for your commitment to serving your communities. The work you do every day makes
a meaningful difference in the communities you serve, and the Institute is proud to support you in
that effort. In recognition of Public Service Recognition Week, we extend our sincere
appreciation for your service.
This week, we celebrate Public Service Recognition Week by honoring county employees who
keep essential services running and strengthen California communities every day. We also take
this opportunity to spotlight dedicated individuals whose work in county government, like yours,
shapes daily life and drives meaningful impact.
Today, we celebrate Sarah, a remarkable leader in Kings County.
Sarah Poots
Risk Manager, Kings County Administration
How do you explain to others what you do?
As a Risk Manager, I wear many hats. I’m a professional “what
if?” thinker, insurance whisperer, calm in the storm, budget
protector, and occasional fun police. I often say Risk
Management solves problems you didn’t know existed using
methods you didn’t realize were even options. My responsibilities
at the County include workers’ compensation, general liability,
insurance programs, employee benefits, and safety.
What drew you to public service?
My path into public service started with a two-week vocational placement requirement. I was
having trouble finding an opportunity when my instructor suggested I try local government
because they’re often more willing to help members of the community. She was right. I
reached out to the Department of Juvenile Justice in New South Wales, Australia, and they
gave me a chance. After that placement, I was offered an extra help position, which turned
into a permanent role. Over the next ten years, I worked my way up through several roles
across the Department of Juvenile Justice, the Office of Education, and the Department of
Education and Training. When I moved to the United States, I brought my stepdaughters to
the Kings County Clerk-Recorder’s Office to apply for passports. Walking into the government
center for the first time, I turned to my husband and said, “This is where I will work.”
What’s the best piece of advice that you ever received?
“You’ll never know if you never try.” It applies to careers, big moves, and occasionally saying
Three A’s: what’s your favorite Artist, Attraction, and Appetizer.
My favorite artist is Vincent van Gogh, my favorite attraction is the beach, and my favorite
appetizer is calamari.
