Thank you for your commitment to serving your communities. The work you do every day makes a meaningful difference in the communities you serve, and the Institute is proud to support you in that work. This week, we celebrate Public Service Recognition Week by honoring county employees who keep services running and strengthen California communities every day. We spotlight dedicated individuals whose work in county government, like yours, shapes daily life and strengthens our communities. Today, we celebrate Kyla, a remarkable leader in Shasta County. Kyla Brower Chief Deputy Auditor, Shasta County How do you explain to others what you do? As Chief Deputy Auditor, I am part of a team that works to safeguard public funds through ensuring compliance with regulations and policies, providing transparency and accuracy, in the review of financial records and reporting. As a manager, I work to train and build up members of the team through knowledge sharing and skill building to collectively meet organizational goals. I work collaboratively across departments to provide training on accounting policies and development of best practices. As administrator of the County’s finance system, I ensure data integrity through system maintenance and user security to support financial records keeping countywide. What drew you to public service? What drew me to public service was an instance of the right opportunity at the right time. What keeps me in public service is the feeling of making a difference in my community, even in small ways that can sometimes go unnoticed behind the scenes. What’s the best piece of advice that you ever received? One of my favorite pieces of advice is that “You bring your own weather.” The mindset you bring to any situation will reflect in the attitudes of others and the outcome. You have the choice to bring good weather or bad weather. Three A’s: what’s your favorite Artist, Attraction, and Appetizer.
