Hi Chuck,
Can you put this on the agenda for next week? APNs: 030‐230‐069/070 and 078. I have been working on this one with
Dan and Rob Hill. Gentleman wants to have goats or sheep and produce cheese. Animal density is no problem, he has
more than 20 acres contiguous. See below emails.

Tristan,
The animal keeping use is clearly allowed under the RR zone in the ZO. The dairy use, as defined under Intensive Animal
Operations, may be hard to reconcile as that use is clearly not allowed in this zone. It seems like we have answered this
question before. Let’s take this to the planning division meeting for discussion. The use may be hard to permit in this
zone as it is primarily a residential zone. The keeping of animal for personal use or consumption would not be a
problem. The operation of a commercial dairy in this zone woud be.

Hi Tristan,
There is no actual CDFA definition for a dairy, if you milk the animals and sell (or process and sell) the milk, that’s a
dairy.

Carrying capacity or grazing capacity is the maximum stocking rate possible while maintaining or improving vegetation
or related resources. So on average grazing quality land, Standard carrying capacity, for goats, is about 6 animal/ acre.
For twenty acres that’s up to 120 goats. Seems like a lot of goats but that’s one goat for every 7260 sqft. of good
forage. They love manzanita.
He called, I talked with him for a bit.

Hi Rob,
I had Ed Tech call you about a dairy question, basically, how many sheep/goats would constitute a dairy or intensive
animal operation here in the County.
He is residentially zoned and is mentioning less than 50 animals total (on 20+ acres contiguous parcels) the zoning
prohibits intensive animal operations and we just need the threshold for the IAO.
Thanks,
