Under authority of Public Resources Code (PRC)Section 4290 and 4291,Butte County Improvement Standards (BCIS),
California Building Code (CBC), and the California Fire Code (CFC), and Chapter 38A Butte County Code, the following
items are required by CAL FIRE/Butte County Fire Department for all development located within the State and Local
Responsibility Areas of Butte County and are required as part of this permit.These requirements are minimums and may be
superseded by Butte County local regulations exceeding these standards.

1272,09l^aintenance of Defensible Space Measures
jy_To ensure continuedmaintenance of properties inconformancewith these standardsand measuresand to assure
continuedavailability, access, and utilization of the defensiblespace providedfor these standardsduring a wildfire,
provisions for annual maintenance shall be included in the development plans and/or shall be provided as a condition ofthe
permit, parcel or map approval.
DRIV^AV STANDARDS
1273,M)Driveways
_^/_(a)All new driveway construction oran extension ofan existing driveway shall comply with Public Resources Code
4290 roadway requirements.Driveways can only serve a single parcel.
Length of Driveway
(b) All driveways shall provide a minimum 10 foot traffic lane and unobstructed vertical clearance of 15 feet along its
entire length.
1273.02 Driveway Surface
'"TTirsurface shall provide unobstructed access to conventional drive vehicles,including sedans and fire engines.
Surfaces should be established in conformance with local ordinances,and be capable of supporting a 40,000 pound load. 4"
of class 2 aggregate base shall be required for all driveways, turnouts and turnarounds.
1273J)3 Driveway Grades
_/_The grade for all drivewaysshall not exceed 15%withoutbeingpaved. Gradesover 15%shall have4" of class2
aggregate base and 2"of asphalt concrete. No driveways allowed in excess of 20%.
1273.04 Driveway Radius
(X (a)No roadway shall have a horizontal inside radius ofcurvature of less than 50 feet and additional surface width of4
feet^all be added to curves of 50-100 feet radius;2 feet to those from 100-200 feet.
(b) The length of verticalcurves inroadways,exclusive of gutters, ditches,and drainage structuresdesignedto hold or
divert water,shall be not less than 100 feet.

127^5 Driveway Turnarounds
•xX (d) A turnaround shall be provided to all building sites on driveways over 300 feet in length, and shall be within 50
feet of the building.
z Turnarounds are required on driveways and dead-end roads as specified in this article. The minimum turning radius for
a turnaround shall be 40 feet from the center line of the road.If a hammerhead-T is used, the top of the "T'shall be a
minimum of 60 feet in length.
127^.06 Driveway Turnouts
;^(c)Driveways exceeding 150 feet in length, but less than 800 feet in length, shall provide a turnout near the midpoint
of/the driveway.\^ere the driveway exceeds 800 feet,turnouts shall be provided no more than 400 feet apart.
Turnouts shall be a minimum of 10 feet wide and 30 feet long with a minimum 25 foot taper on each end.
If73.07 Driveway Structures
_(a)All driveway,road, street, and private laneroadwaystructures (Bridges, culverts, and otherappurtenantstructures
wjhich supplement the roadway bed or shoulders)shall be constructed to carry at least the maximum load and provide the
nr inimum vertical clearance as required by Vehicle Code Sections 35550,35750 and 35250.Ail bridges shall be certified
b;'a registered Civil Engineer.
_(b)Appropriate signing, including but not limited to weight or vertical clearance limitations, one-way road or single
h ne conditions,shall reflect the capability of each bridge.
A bridge with only one traffic lane may be authorized by the local jurisdiction;however, it shall provide for
unobstructed visibility from one end to the other and turnouts at both ends.
GATE STANDARDS
1273JJ.'Gate Entrance
iZ(a)Gate entrancesshallbe at leasttwo feetwideronboth endsthenthe width of the trafficlane(s)servingthat gate.
Minimum 14 foot opening^
_(b)All gates providing access from a road to a driveway shall be located at least 30 feet from the roadway and shall
open to allow a vehicle to stop without obstructing traffic on that road.
Where a one-way road with a single traffic lane provides access to a gated entrance; a 40 foot turning radius shall
be used.
SIGNING AND BUILDING NUMBERING
1274.00.Intent
To facilitate locating an emergency and to avoid delays in response, all newly constructed or approved roads, street, and
buildings shall be designated by names or numbers, posted on signs clearly visible and legible from the roadway. This section
shall not restrict the size of letters of numbers appearing on street signs for other purposes.
ADDRESSING
1274^.Addresses for Buildings
//All buildings shall be issued an address by the local jurisdiction which conforms to that jurisdiction's overall address
system.Accessorybuildingswill not be requiredto have a separate address; however,each dwelling unit withina building
shall be ^parately identified.
1274^.Size of Letters,Numbers and Symbols for Addresses
(X Size of letters, numbers and symbols for addresses shall be a minimum 4 inch letter height, 3/8 inch stroke,
reflect^ed,contrasting with the background color of the sign.
1274.10.Installation,Location and Visibility of Addresses
V (a) All buildings shall have a permanently posted address, which shall be placed at each driveway entrance and visible
from both directions of travel alongthe road.In all cases,the address shallbe postedat the beginning of constructionand
shall be maintained thereafter, and the address shall be visible and legible from the road on which the address is located.

direction.
/^(c)Where multiple addresses are required ata single driveway,they shall be mounted on a single post.
FUEL MODIFICATION STANDARDS
1276.00 Intent
To reduce the intensity of a wildfire by reducing the volume and density of flammable vegetation, the strategic location of
fuel modification and greenbelts shall provide;
(1) Increased safety for emergency fire equipment and evacuating civilians;
(2) Apointof attackor defensefroma wildfire.
127^1 Setback for Structure Defensible Space SRA only
^(a)All parcels 1acre and larger shall provide a minimum 30 foot setback for buildings and accessory buildings from
all property lines and/or the center of the road.
127^02 Disposal ofFlammableVegetationand Fuels
Disposal,includingchipping,burningor removalto a landfillsiteapprovedbythe localjurisdiction,of flammable
vegetation and fuels causedbysite development and construction,roadand driveway construction,andfuel modification
shall be completed prior to completion of road construction or final inspection of a building permit.
DEFE^IBLE SPACE GUIDELINES

X Apersonthatowns,leases,controls,operates,or maintains a buildingor structure in,upon,or adjoining any
mountainousarea,forest-covered lands,brush-coveredlands,grass-coveredlands,or any landthatis coveredwithflammable
materia}«^hall at all times do all of the following:
(b) Maintainaroundand adjacentto the buildingor structureadditionalfireprotectionor firebreakmadeby removing
all brush,flammablevegetation,or combustiblegrowththat is locatedwithin 100 feetfromthe buildingor structureor to the
property lineor atagreater distance if required bystatelaw,or local ordinance,rule,or regulation.Grassandother
vegetation locatedmorethan30feetfromthebuildingorstructureandlessthan 18 inchesinheightabovethegroundmaybe
maintained where necessaryto stabilizethe soil and preventerosion. This subdivisiondoes not applyto single specimens of
trees or othervegetationthat is well-prunedandmaintainedso as to effectivelymanagefuelsandnot forma means of rapidly
transmitting fire from other nearby vegetation to a dwelling or structure.

Maintain any tree adjacent to or overhanging a building free of dead or dying wood.
Maintain the roof of a structure free of leaves, needles, or other dead vegetative growth.
(f)Priorto constructinga newbuildingor structureor rebuildinga buildingor structuredamagedbya fire insuch an
area,theconstructionor rebuilding of whichrequiresa buildingpermit,the owner shallobtaina certificationfromthe local
building officialthatthe dwelling or structure,as proposed to bebuilt,complies withall applicable stateandlocalbuilding
standards,including thosedescribedin subdivision (b)of Section 51189 of the Government Code,andshallprovidea copy
ofthe certification,uponrequest,to the insurerprovidingcourseof construction insurance coverageforthebuildingor
structure.Uponcompletion of the constructionor rebuilding,the ownershallobtainfromthe localbuildingofficial,a copy of
the final inspection reportthat demonstrates thatthe dwelling or structure was constructed in compliance withall applicable
stateandlocalbuilding standards,including those described in subdivision (b)of Section 51189 ofthe Government Code,
andshall provide acopyofthe report,upon request,tothe property insurance carrierthat insures the dwelling or structure.

Prior to any lot clearing activity or cutting of trees,contact the Butte area Forester at (530)872-6353 to determine the
need for a less then 3 acre conversion exemption permit or a timber harvest plan.If required,a copy of the Timber Harvest
Plan or less than 3 acre conversion exemption permit will need to be reviewed at the final inspection.

6107<3,LPG Tank Clearance of Combustibles
l/Weeds,grass,brush,trash and other combustible materials shall be kept a minimum of 10 feet from LP-gas tanks or
containers.
6107^Protecting LPG containers from vehicles
y/Where exposed to vehicular damage due to proximity to alleys,driveways or parking areas,LP-gas containers,
regulators and piping shall be protected in accordance with Section 312.
Fim Department Fees
J Fire department fees are collected by the Butte County Development Services Department at the time of application for
your buildingpermit. Youare assessedtwo fees(pre-inspectionand final inspection).Additional fees will be assessed when
the fire department inspector is required to perform additional re-inspections of your property,those
additional fees must be paid to Development Services, 7 County Center Drive in Oroville.
