Tristan Weems,
Sherwood Montessori (SM) is a small (approximately 140 students) public charter school (K-8) and is collocated on the Chapman Elementary School Campus in Chico, CA. All primary classrooms
and offices reside on the Chapman Elementary Campus. In June, 2016, SM purchased 1010 Cleveland Ave from Butte County for the purpose of providing enhanced educational opportunities
to SM students.
The intent of this letter is to inform Butte County of our desired use of 1010 Cleveland Ave for the purpose of acquiring the necessary permit(s) etc. to conform to Butte County regulations.
SM would like to use 1010 Cleveland Ave in order to enhance the educational opportunities for SM students and potentially students at Chapman Elementary and possibly other public schools
as well. This use will fall under a few different categories which are listed here.
Instruction
SM would like to use 1010 Cleveland as an occasional classroom for students. Individual classrooms would visit the site occasionally throughout the day to participate in specialized
instruction; music, art, science, reading etc. The number of students visiting the site at any one time would be governed by safety regulations including fire codes.
Cooking and Gardening
SM has a well-developed cooking and gardening program that is an integral educational component of the school curriculum. SM would like to use 1010 Cleveland for the purposes of supporting
this program. Activities would include
student gardening in the outdoor space and participating in various kitchen activities including cooking in the existing kitchen of the structure.
Extended Care (After care)
SM would like to utilize 1010 Cleveland Ave for our Extended Care Program. Our Extended Care Program is offered to students of SM after the regular school day has ended and is staffed
with child care specialists that engage students in various learning activities; art, music, games etc. Our After Care Program occurs M-F after school until 6:00 pm.
School Community Gatherings
SM would like to use 1010 Cleveland Ave to hold occasional school events that would include students, staff, and parents for the purpose of fostering school spirit. School gatherings
would take place a few times a year, typically after school, and may include games and activities for the students.
